The public can test taste figs and learn how to use them at a free demonstration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Island Naturals Market and Deli. Chef Rob Love of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel will offer free fruit samples and use Maui Gold pineapple to prepare pineapple-wrapped figs with goat cheese. Ken Love, Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers president, will be on hand to answer horticulture questions.
HTFG is working to build markets for its juicy rarities through a series of free public taste tests and culinary demonstrations at stores on four Hawaiian Islands throughout 2012. A dozen educational demonstrations are planned and participating stores will stock the fruit in their produce sections, accompanied by recipes and additional fruit information to take home.
Titled “New Markets for Ultra-Exotic Fruits,” the event series is funded by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture through a U.S. Department of Agriculture competitive grant program to foster small farm sustainability.

Tropical Edibles installing artwork
Tropical Edibles Nursery will celebrate the installation of work by two local artists at its facility from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 7. South Kona artists Shez Arvedon and Gerald Lucena will be present at the opening of the show “Flora, Fauna & Flotsam.”
Arvedon will display her natural fiber assemblages created from a variety of different plant material and found objects. Lucena will be showing a sampling of his paintings and prints that include floral and landscaping motifs.
The event is free and all are welcome to attend. Libations and snacks will be offered. The art will remain on display through January and can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Kona Subaru hosts ‘Share the Love’ event
Kona Subaru invites the public to attend “Share the Love” day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The dealership will host the event on behalf of Hawaii Island Humane Society.
The Humane Society will have dogs and kittens looking for forever homes. A $25 Petco gift card is included with every adoption and adoption fees are free for current Subaru owners or for those who purchase a vehicle during the event. The public is encouraged to “Share the Love” and stop and by to donate pet care supplies, such as bleach, cat litter, dish soap, paper towels, trash bags, old linens (towels, blankets and sheets), pet food and treats.
